Summary

Tautly wound and expertly crafted, 'Two Nights in Lisbon' is a riveting thriller about a woman under pressure, and how far she will go when everything is on the line。

“I defy anyone to read the first twenty pages of this breakneck novel, then try to put it down for five minutes。 This is smart suspense at its very best。”—#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham

You think you know a person。。。。

Ariel Pryce wakes up in Lisbon, alone。 Her husband is gone—no warning, no note, not answering his phone。 Something is wrong。

She starts with hotel security, then the police, then the American embassy, at each confronting questions she can’t fully answer: What exactly is John doing in Lisbon? Why would he drag her along on his business trip? Who would want to harm him? And why does Ariel know so little about her new—much younger—husband?

The clock is ticking。 Ariel is increasingly frustrated and desperate, running out of time, and the one person in the world who can help is the one person she least wants to ask。

With sparkling prose and razor-sharp insights, bestselling author Chris Pavone delivers a stunning and sophisticated international thriller that will linger long after the surprising final page。

"There are many different ways to love; hate is much simpler。" There is a lot to this book: Lisbon, Portugal/NYC/The Hamptons; #metoo; back stories; characters from the privileged "elite" to local police to the CIA; all in a political intrigue/action/mystery/thriller that I couldn't figure out until the very end。 Ariel wakes up at her hotel in Lisbon after accompanying her husband there on a business trip, but her husband is gone, kidnapped。 Who did it? Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review! This is your run-of-the-mill mystery thriller, BUT that isn't to say I didn't enjoy myself。 I fully did。 I would not say this one was without its tropes, but at the same time, it wasn't necessarily predictable either。An enjoyable read that I think fans of the genre may enjoy。 Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review! This is your run-of-the-mill mystery thriller, BUT that isn't to say I didn't enjoy myself。 I fully did。 I would not say this one was without its tropes, but at the same time, it wasn't necessarily predictable either。An enjoyable read that I think fans of the genre may enjoy。 。。。more

Two Nights in Lisbon is a terrific listen with strong narration, storytelling and questions marks until the bitter end。 Chris Pavone is an accomplished writer in the international thriller genre with plotting that incorporates character arcs as well as page-turning pace。 This one started out a little slow for me, but picked up by the midpoint。 Descriptions of Lisbon, a mystery identity and great narration by January LaVoy kept me listening。 And the pay-off in the second half was big。

Excellent audiobook narrator and a good story

Two Nights in Lisbon hums with the propulsive intensity you expect from a great thriller。 This could be the beach read of this summer season。 Protagonist Ariel Pryce is the keeper of some juicy secrets, and we, the readers, will absolutely do whatever it takes to learn them。 All this suspense and the litany of known unknowns (and a few unknown unknowns as well!) speed us along to a delicious tease of a denouement。 But this book is more than just the sum of its perfectly placed plot elements, It' Two Nights in Lisbon hums with the propulsive intensity you expect from a great thriller。 This could be the beach read of this summer season。 Protagonist Ariel Pryce is the keeper of some juicy secrets, and we, the readers, will absolutely do whatever it takes to learn them。 All this suspense and the litany of known unknowns (and a few unknown unknowns as well!) speed us along to a delicious tease of a denouement。 But this book is more than just the sum of its perfectly placed plot elements, It's also a treatise on the perils awaiting men who misunderstand female vulnerability and underestimate the women around them。 Oh, what a tangled web we weave… 。。。more

Listened to this book in audio format and it was fantastic! The narrator is perfectly suited to the role and her inflection amped up the suspense at just the right time。 Perfect summer who-done-it with a twisty “why?” At the end I didn’t see coming。 Highly recommended!

The plot was fairly enjoyable, but too much social commentary padding, especially regarding the horrors of social media and lack of privacy in modern world。 It was distracting。

I have loved Chris Pavone's 3 previous books, but I am really stumped about Two Nights。 。 。 I love anything involving CIA-type intrigue and of course this has some of that。 The protagonist's husband disappears in Lisbon and that begins the escapade, and then of course there are many, many twists and turns。 But。 。 。I was about 40% into the book before it got very interesting, or in fact, maybe I was further into it。 Pavone has chosen to write about an event that the protagonist has, and then some I have loved Chris Pavone's 3 previous books, but I am really stumped about Two Nights。 。 。 I love anything involving CIA-type intrigue and of course this has some of that。 The protagonist's husband disappears in Lisbon and that begins the escapade, and then of course there are many, many twists and turns。 But。 。 。I was about 40% into the book before it got very interesting, or in fact, maybe I was further into it。 Pavone has chosen to write about an event that the protagonist has, and then somehow he writes about her doubts and fears, and/or context, for MUCH too much of the time。The story does skip back and forth - from the present time in Lisbon to the past, which is crucial to knowing the full story。 。 。it's not hard to follow the time changes。 I think this book was just so filled with extraneous musings that I lost interest; also, I wasn't very surprised at the end, when there is more of the REVEAL。 I am disappointed。 。。。more

Two Nights in Lisbon is a fabulous read and definitely one of my favorite novels so far this year。 A smart, fast-paced suspense novel with a unique premise and subtle surprises in store for the reader, it starts with a newly-married couple on a short business trip to Portugal but quickly turns into a kidnaping story, complete with false identities, ransom demands, a frantic out-of-her-depth wife, and less-than-helpful police officials。 As the hours tick by, we’re increasingly aware that we don’t Two Nights in Lisbon is a fabulous read and definitely one of my favorite novels so far this year。 A smart, fast-paced suspense novel with a unique premise and subtle surprises in store for the reader, it starts with a newly-married couple on a short business trip to Portugal but quickly turns into a kidnaping story, complete with false identities, ransom demands, a frantic out-of-her-depth wife, and less-than-helpful police officials。 As the hours tick by, we’re increasingly aware that we don’t know the whole story behind this adventure which means we’re frantically flipping pages to learn what’s actually going on。 How far will Ariel go to save the man she loves? And who will believe her and step in to help? When the police fail to treat her seriously, she pulls in all her contacts, both at the US Embassy and back home in America to get someone, anyone, to help her locate her missing spouse。 The author took his time to spool out the plot and I for one enjoyed that pace as it gave me time to muse about what I would do in the same situation and provided me with several evenings of reading enjoyment as opposed to other thriller/suspense novels which practically race through the narrative at breakneck speed。 If you’re looking for a political thriller with subtle clues and a surprising denouement, this is one I’d highly recommend。 Plus I loved that this was set in Portugal, a setting I rarely see used in novels。 My thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy。 。。。more

3。8 rounded up。 I loved the story and how it unfolded。 However this book could’ve used some strong editing it got very wordy in places。 And about halfway through it lost its great passing。 But still overall a good thriller。

Two Nights in Lisbon is a thriller。 The story unfolds masterfully and kept me intrigued on how the book would end。 This is my first book to read by Chris Pavone。 I will definitely be reading more books written by Pavone。

Great character development。 A 2022 version of Bonfire of the Vanities。 Good suspense throughout。

Ariel Pryce has accompanied her husband John, to Lisbon, on a business trip。 When he is missing one morning, she goes to the local police, then the American Embassy。 They have a hard time believing her until the hotel finds a note that was discovered by the maid cleaning the room。There are a lot of secrets in Ariel and John's past。 I had a hard time connecting with Ariel, despite her being a very strong personality (which I am usually drawn to)。 She is very opinionated, and her views would provi Ariel Pryce has accompanied her husband John, to Lisbon, on a business trip。 When he is missing one morning, she goes to the local police, then the American Embassy。 They have a hard time believing her until the hotel finds a note that was discovered by the maid cleaning the room。There are a lot of secrets in Ariel and John's past。 I had a hard time connecting with Ariel, despite her being a very strong personality (which I am usually drawn to)。 She is very opinionated, and her views would provide fodder for a number of popular talk/news shows。 However, as a side note, not every male who drives a white pickup is a white supremacist, and not every person who lived in the south owned slaves。 Ariel is born privileged and spurns that lifestyle especially after a very violent and tragic episode。 Despite this, I still couldn't conjure that emotional empathy that should have been there for this character。Having said all that, why do I feel like so many of the books I read lately are written in hopes that Netflix or Amazon Prime will pick them up? This definitely falls into that category with me。 While the premise of the 400+ page book was really good, the story is an extremely slow buildup。 I had a hard time staying interested and towards the end, when the twists really reveal themselves, I had lost interest。 。。。more

Not by any means a bad book, but for whatever reason, it never took hold。 In some circles that's called aesthetic distance。 Lots of characters kept popping in and out and at times it was hard to remember exactly who they were。 Not to mention that none of them were very likable。 When I got to the end and the reveal, it struck me as a bit ginned up。 I'm sure lots of folks will enjoy this one and I can't say it didn't have its moments, but taken as a whole, three stars seems about right。 Not by any means a bad book, but for whatever reason, it never took hold。 In some circles that's called aesthetic distance。 Lots of characters kept popping in and out and at times it was hard to remember exactly who they were。 Not to mention that none of them were very likable。 When I got to the end and the reveal, it struck me as a bit ginned up。 I'm sure lots of folks will enjoy this one and I can't say it didn't have its moments, but taken as a whole, three stars seems about right。 。。。more

This book sucked me in and I went along for a wild ride。 It was more of a mystery than a thriller - there wasn't any big twist, but there were lots of open questions for the reader to try to figure out。 The main character is very relatable and the characters seemed very true to life。 Definitely recommend this one! Twisty and dual time lines but with enough momentum to keep you riveted。 Lots of feminist diatribe that cut no slack but also totally relatable。 Also railed against political pundits, capitalism, social media and other tech surveillance。 But that story line! Who is being honest here and what's the hidden agenda? A little bit manipulative of the author but it brought out some good discussion with my husband who was listening with me on a long car ride。 Twisty and dual time lines but with enough momentum to keep you riveted。 Lots of feminist diatribe that cut no slack but also totally relatable。 Also railed against political pundits, capitalism, social media and other tech surveillance。 But that story line! Pavone nailed it。 He gave us a suspense novel with slow-rolling peaks and valleys with just the right pacing, and I appreciated how he delivered the underlying messages about power。 I listened to this book, and highly recommend it。

Social issue-centric books should become their own official genre so you know what to expect when going into them。 Some are done well, while others feel like you’re reading someone’s soapbox manifesto。 This one is the latter。 The issues presented were portrayed in a very heavy-handed, “after school special” kind of way。 You see it coming from a mile away and there’s nothing new or surprising。 Once again, I feel duped by the modern day book marketing machine that overhypes mediocre books because Social issue-centric books should become their own official genre so you know what to expect when going into them。 Some are done well, while others feel like you’re reading someone’s soapbox manifesto。 This one is the latter。 The issues presented were portrayed in a very heavy-handed, “after school special” kind of way。 You see it coming from a mile away and there’s nothing new or surprising。 Once again, I feel duped by the modern day book marketing machine that overhypes mediocre books because the publisher has marketing dollars to throw behind it。 The press built this book up to be something it is definitely not。 Much of this book dragged on and on; an “edge of your seat thriller” it is not。There are so many repetitive elements in this book from the descriptions of rich people and their Botox, the irredeemable qualities of powerful men, to “honestly” as a conversational crutch。 I’m shocked no one in editing suggested more variances。 Overall, this novel got more annoying the more of it I read and definitely wasn’t worth finishing。 By the end, I outright hated it。 I genuinely do not understand all of the overinflated press over this book。 。。。more

I randomly pulled this off the shelf at work because the premise seemed interesting from an "I enjoyed 'The Flight Attendant'" point of view: a woman wakes up in a hotel room in Lisbon to find her husband missing, and over the next couple of days finds her world unraveling as she tries to track him down。 But she might actually be the one holding the very thread that ties everything together。。。I enjoyed this from a pacing and plotting perspective, and the side commentary on The Way Things Are The I randomly pulled this off the shelf at work because the premise seemed interesting from an "I enjoyed 'The Flight Attendant'" point of view: a woman wakes up in a hotel room in Lisbon to find her husband missing, and over the next couple of days finds her world unraveling as she tries to track him down。 But she might actually be the one holding the very thread that ties everything together。。。I enjoyed this from a pacing and plotting perspective, and the side commentary on The Way Things Are These Days was just not-cynical enough for me to appreciate it (this seems to be a trait of the author's other novels, which I have not read)。 It was certainly compelling, and a decent enough distraction from capital-l Life。 I'd say definitely try it if you like slow burners and have some time to kill, or feel like staying up late a couple of nights, but don't expect the "breakneck" "un-put-down-ability" that the blurbs promise。 。。。more

I had a little trouble getting into this one but I stuck with it and it came together nicely。 An newly married American couple travels to Lisbon where the husband is kidnapped。 His wife needs to come up with a large ransom。 Parts of the book are flashbacks from her past life where she has a different name and lifestyle。 There were lots of hints regarding her backstory but they were slow to be revealed。 I found the many characters from law enforcement agencies confusing。 The ending was clever but I had a little trouble getting into this one but I stuck with it and it came together nicely。 An newly married American couple travels to Lisbon where the husband is kidnapped。 His wife needs to come up with a large ransom。 Parts of the book are flashbacks from her past life where she has a different name and lifestyle。 There were lots of hints regarding her backstory but they were slow to be revealed。 I found the many characters from law enforcement agencies confusing。 The ending was clever but getting there was puzzling at times。 I thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC。 。。。more
